Our Democracy, Our Priority: A Message From the Florida Supervisors of Elections--Wesley Wilcox - Tuesday, November 2, 2021

Our Democracy, Our Priority

The Great American Experiment, our cherished democracy, is under threat. Our nation is only as strong as the faith our citizens have that their voice, their vote, has a say in our government. In this hour, public trust in our elections is being systematically undermined, to the detriment of all Americans.

As election professionals, we have sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Our Constitution is built upon the idea that “we the people” choose our government. We put that idea into practice through elections. It is the foundation and core unifying principle of our democracy.

As the official trusted sources of election information and experts in our fields, we continuously strive to debunk false claims, and ensure voters have access to accurate election information. We are dedicated to the cause of election integrity, ensuring that every eligible voter’s ballot is counted accurately and that no fraud takes place. But false claims of fraud do not strengthen our elections. Instead, they degrade confidence in the institutions, and discourage citizen participation in our democracy.

During and after the 2020 Presidential Election, the integrity of our democracy has been challenged by misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation that sows discord and undermines trust in America’s electoral process. Many of us have been threatened by our fellow citizens who have been led astray by these deceptions.

Instead of standing idly by, we ask all candidates and elected officials to tone down the rhetoric and stand up for our democracy. We ask that you work with us to understand the safeguards implemented to ensure elections are conducted fairly, securely, and accurately.

In the Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln proclaimed that the American people must dedicate themselves to ensuring that “Government of the people, by the people, for the people must not perish from the Earth.” It is through elections that government by the people is accomplished. To this end, we call on officials at all levels of government to commit themselves to the goal of fighting falsehoods and strengthening voter trust. We can rise to this challenge. Our democracy depends on it.

Lake County Election Facts

Lake County Election Facts

Lake County Election Facts

It has recently come to my attention that many citizens of Lake County have been wrongly informed about the results of the 2020 Elections and the security of our elections systems. As your elected Supervisor of Elections, I feel you deserve to know the true facts and it is in that spirit I offer the following information…

  1. The results of the 2020 Election published on our website, www.LakeVotes.gov, are the true and accurate results.
  1. Our office is in complete compliance regarding every aspect of the Florida Election Code, Chapters 97-106 of the Florida Statutes.
  1. Every single vote reposted in our elections has a paper ballot matching that vote. All of our ballots are paper.
  1. Each and every one of our tabulation machines are tested BEFORE they are used in an election. The test is advertised and open to the public.
  1. None of our machines are connected to the internet.
  1. All the data from our machines is verified AFTER the election.
  1. We mail Vote-By-Mail ballots ONLY to those voters who request them.
  1. Every single returned Vote-By-Mail ballot is returned in an envelope signed by the voter only.
  1. The signature on EVERY returned envelope is examined first by a machine. If the machine cannot match the envelope signature with the signature on file in that voter’s record, we then have trained humans examine the signature. If they can’t verify a matching signature on file, the voter is notified and informed what to do to resolve the mismatch. This process of resolving the mismatch is referred to as “Curing.” NO returned ballots are accepted for tabulation until that process of resolution is completed.
  1. Anyone who tells you that votes were stolen from one candidate and given to another candidate by manipulation of our tabulation machines does NOT know what they are talking about and they are NOT being truthful. I have seen some allegations that were based only on statistical models and those models are NOT reflective of the actual votes cast by Lake County voters. Some of these people and groups may be well intentioned but they are ignorant of our equipment and processes.
  1. Our office was designed to be transparent. We have a total of 144 square feel of glass observation windows in our Vote-By-Mail department, our tabulation room, and our canvassing board room so the public can readily observe our work as we accomplish it. ALL deliberations of the canvassing board are conducted in full view of the public. The public is able to see the documents being considered by the board. The discussion by board members is also fully audible to the public.
  1. Our manual audit of the election results matched 100% of the reported tabulated results, and is in complete compliance with the Florida Statutes.
  1. Our office has times scheduled on Tuesday and Thursdays for tours. We will be happy to book individuals or groups of up to 10 or 12 at a time for viewing of operation.
  1. The Florida Statutes allow us to use only machines that are approved and certified by the Bureau of Voting Systems Certification of the Department of State, Division of Elections. We use ES&S machines that are manufactured in the USA.
  1. We have a complete chain of custody of our machines and our ballots for every election. All ballots from each election are stored for 22 months under camera surveillance until shredded under our supervision, on our property.

PLEASE feel welcome to use us, your Supervisor of Elections office, as your “go to” source for all elections information.

Respectfully yours,

Alan
